CRAZY

Feminist Punk Art Show

Curator Statement

CRAZY is an exhibition of fine art by female identifying and non-binary artists that creates a safe space for rage, protest, and performance. This art will confront the centuries old stereotype of expressive, opinionated, intelligent women being labeled as “crazy” or “loud” by making space for those feelings and presenting them as fine art. Inspired by afro-punk art movements and feminist punk music movements, CRAZY showcases art that embraces maximalist self-expression as a method of social advocacy.

Together the 55 works are a vibrant celebration of creativity across media: painting, photography, installation, light art, video, performance, and sculpture. We are the Guerilla Girls. We are Riot Grrl. We are Pussy Riot. We are AfroPunk. We continue the legacy of unapologetic, angry, loud women who refuse to be silenced by galleries, politicians, or sexist societal norms. We have a voice and we will use it to sing a ballad of self empowerment. They call us CRAZY, but that was just the sound check.

Curated Playlists

Guest Curator, Jaime Ransome, had created one of her signature Curated Playlists to help artists and attendees get in the right head space for CRAZY.

Artists seeking inspiration to make new work can listen to this playlist to help them source their rage.

OR add to the playlist with inspiration of their own experiences to inspire others.

Send options for Track 10 to @jransome.curator to be part of the conversation about loud, feminist punk musicians and bands and inspire the next generation of girl punks!

Zine Workshop and Music Exchange

In conjunction with our exhibition CRAZY, we welcome folks to gather at the gallery to make political zines and listen to each other’s music. Attendees are encouraged to bring their old magazines and books to share, as well as CDs, tapes, and flash drives to give away or exchange music—everyone can also add to a collaborative digital playlist. This is a small, intimate event where people will come together over conversation, crafts, and punk music.

Feminist Open Mic Night

In conjunction with our exhibition CRAZY, we’re hosting a Feminist Open Mic in the gallery. On Saturday, January, 31st from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. Come and sign up for a two- to five-minute time slot to rant, sing, perform poetry, do comedy and whatever else that feels cathartic. This will be a night of expression, exploration and community care.
